Learning to Use "The Cloud"

In desktop publishing we are going to be doing things quite a bit differently than in past years. Most of the software applications that we will be using are NOT installed on your computers. They are online applications which can be accessed anytime and any place where there is a computer with an internet connection. Your work will not be saved on your desktop machine or on our school's network server. It will be saved by the application you are using. We call this cloud computing

Cloud computing has several advantages:

  1. You don't have to be at school to work on your assignments. You can access them with any computer that has an internet connection.
  2. Cloud computing saves our school a great deal of money, because we don't have to purchase, upgrade, or maintain any software.
  3. Saving is easy! Your work is saved "in the cloud" on someone else's servers!

We can build Web sites completely online. I used orbs.com to create this one. We will be researching and using several other online Web design tools. We will also create presentations and videos using online tools. You will also learn to capture any part of your screen and save it as a still image or a video. In addition, you will learn to edit photos and audio files.

I'm excited about cloud computing, and I think you are going to find that it is fun and easy!
